Tracking the trade rumors swirling around the Phoenix Suns ahead of the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline and how potential moves could impact the franchise.
Rumor: Jimmy Butler to the Phoenix Suns
Butler has made it no secret he wants out of Miami. He’s been suspended by the Heat multiple times, most recently for an “indefinite” period when he walked out of shootaround following being told he wouldn’t be in the starting lineup anymore. While his trade destination wish list includes every team except the Memphis Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings, he’s most often been linked to the Suns.
Across just 25 games, Butler is averaging 17.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists on 54/36.1/80.1 shooting splits. While the scoring numbers are down from his career averages, the other numbers are aligned with his previous stats, so you can perhaps chalk up the scoring decline to a lack of interest in playing for his current squad.
This has been going on for months now and seems like it could just be a formality that Butler ends up a Phoenix Sun. The main hurdle to getting a deal done is Bradley Beal’s no trade clause which he would need to waive in order to help make salaries match in a potential trade. There’s also been rumors the New Orleans Pelicans are interested in trading for Butler.
Come playoff time there are few players who can rival Butler’s output, but there are also plenty of questions surrounding Butler’s fit long-term. Will he re-sign with the Suns this offseason when he has the chance to decline his player option? If he picks the option up, will he be willing to sign an extension? Butler would give Phoenix a point-of-attack defender, but doesn’t provide the floor spacing on offense that Beal can.
The Suns recently acquired three first round picks from the Utah Jazz to help sweeten a Butler trade (or any other trade for that matter). If Jimmy Butler does get moved, expect it to be the Phoenix Suns acquiring his services.
Rumor: Suns turn down trade offers for KD, Devin Booker, but who really knows at this point
According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks and Ramona Shelburne, the Suns have turned down multiple teams looking to trade for Devin Booker and Kevin Durant. This shouldn’t come as any surprise because neither has had any inkling of wanting out of Phoenix. Surely no team would ever trade a generational talent who was committed to staying with their team.
Wait, the Mavericks traded Luka Doncic? Anything is possible at this point, but all signs still point to KD and Book staying Suns for the foreseeable future. Durant is signed through next season and extension eligible while Booker is signed through 2028. According to our very own Gerald Bourguet’s reporting, “the plan is still to build around Devin Booker and Kevin Durant,” adding neither player is being shopped as the Suns explore other trade options. Rest assured, Phoenix’s superstar duo shall remain intact.
Rumor: Guerschon Yabusele drawing interest from multiple teams, including Suns
When originally drafted in 2016, his name was met with a collective “what” and “who” when announced with the 16th pick by Boston. Yabusele quickly fell out of the league for a few years before a strong run with France at the Olympics propelled him back into the NBA spotlight with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Yabusele is also easily acquirable from a financial perspective as he’s on a minimum contract and the Suns have five minimums to choose from on their roster to match in salary. The question more likely is how willing are the Sixers to give up the Dancing Bear? Yabusele has far outplayed his contract, and the Sixers are in an awkward position: not bad enough to get a high draft pick, but not good enough to seriously compete in the playoffs.
The French power forward/center is averaging 10.4 points and 5.5 rebounds on 39.3% shooting from three this year. Though slightly undersized at the center spot, he’d provide some solid floor spacing, rebounding, and a little bit of the toughness the Suns sometimes lack.
Rumor: Nurkić being shopped to multiple teams
Jusuf Nurkić has made his discontent known. After losing the starting center spot and falling out of the rotation, the Bosnian big man has all but said he wants out of town. The problem with finding a trade for Nurkić is, well, he hasn’t been good enough for another team to want him.
On the year, the Nurkić and the Suns are a second to career-worst -6.8 points per 100 possessions with him on the court according to Cleaning the Glass. He’s averaging the least amount of minutes per game since his third season in the NBA and is shooting his worst field goal percentage (45.4%) since his second season.
In order to move Nurkić, it could take attaching another player or pick to the deal like the one proposed by HP Basketball which would send him and Grayson Allen to the Orlando Magic. Other rumored destinations include the Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls, Washington Wizards and Toronto Raptors.
Rumor: Zach LaVine fallback option if Butler trade doesn’t work out
UPDATE: Zach LaVine was traded to the Sacramento Kings on Feb. 2 in a three-team deal sending De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs.
Our very own Gerald Bourguet went much more in depth about Zach LaVine to the Phoenix Suns trades in a recent article, so I’ll give the background.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said that many teams who were originally out on a trade for Jimmy Butler are now poking their noses back into conversations as it looks more and more likely the Suns won’t be able to get a deal done for the five-time All-NBA wing. The Suns seem determined to make a splash at the deadline, and that could mean trying to swing a deal for LaVine.
Though not a sieve on the defensive side of the ball, LaVine wouldn’t fix any defensive issues the same way Butler might, but he packs much more of a scoring punch on better shooting splits. On the year, he’s putting up an All-Star caliber season of 24 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game while shooting a remarkable 44.6% from three.
The big question marks surrounding a LaVine trade would be his fit as a third option and if Bradley Beal would be willing to waive his no trade clause. LaVine has been the man in Chicago for the better part of eight seasons now.
Aside from his first three seasons in Minnesota when he played behind Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns, LaVine has never had to take a backseat to anyone in his career. Being third fiddle could be a major adjustment for the guard. Beal has been rumored to want to go to a warm climate if he was traded, and the brutal Chicago winters and springs are in stark contrast to that wish. With the no trade clause, Beal holds all the cards right now.
While it has also been reported by The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer that LaVine would prefer to stay in Chicago, unlike Beal, he doesn’t have a no trade clause, so LaVine would be at the mercy of whatever the Bulls decide to do with him.
