Ray Anderson is baffling. On one hand he seems to have done an excellent job with the hockey program. On the other, the football program is a dumpster fire of his doing, and he has failed in both basketball and baseball as well.

I think what bothers me most about the current narrative on Ray is those who call him a phony, inept or a disaster. Quite bluntly, it’s terrible analysis.

I have known Ray for a good while now and he is anything but those things. He’s brilliant, he’s uber focused on the student-athlete experience (look into the events he plans for all senior student-athletes), he is engaging and he has made a lot of good decisions. Look at the state of their facilities now vs. when he came in, and look at the plan for those facilities.

Look at some of the big-name coaches he has hired such as Zeke Jones, Bob Bowman and Cliff English, who don’t get as much attention, but have success and create a winning atmosphere for those student-athletes, who matter just as much as football or baseball players.

Look at the academic programs of ASU student-athletes across the board. That is, after all, a university’s primary mission.

It is fair to criticize Ray for what has happened with the football program and the baseball program. I don’t think he is responsible for the football coaching staff’s actions, but he is the steward of the department so he absolutely has to answer for that. One the flip side, to say his tenure has been a disaster is both ignorant and factually incorrect for the reasons that I stated above and more.

I am tired of the black & white analysis that pervades society. There is always nuance, and when you look at Ray’s tenure honestly, you will find an awful lot on the good side of the ledger.

Thanks for your response. I agree; that’s why I categorized him as baffling. I think he also gets at least some of the credit for the football stadium upgrade. But ADs are evaluated, by fans at least, for on field performance. His decision to hire Herm was controversial from day one. Between the two of them, they let Antonio Pierce run roughshod over the rules. Anderson knew Herm is a hands off manager. He deserves a large share of the blame for the current state of the football program.

Sat next to him on a plane to Indianapolis on my way to my wife’s funeral in 2014.
He brightened up as soon as he saw my YOTES hat.

Fascinating read. I had no idea Powers did so much more than coach the team. Quite the visionary. No wonder players gravitate to him. He’s done his part to create the model, we just need other programs to follow the model.

ASU’s rise is one of the best stories in hockey

Don’t count out GCU as a potential school that could join the D1 ranks either. I know that anytime the NCAA has a “summit” of sorts for schools considering adding hockey that GCU has attended each time in recent history.

I actually had a UMD sweatshirt back in 1964.
Have no idea where I got it. I think I found it down at the Boys Club.
Wore it to school every day.
Just thought I’d add that in there.
