Does anyone know if ASU residents are considered to have standing in a referendum? I couldn’t find that info on the Tempe site.

I’m glad the news is trending positive, but Tempe has had this proposal for over a year. I understand that reviewing and negotiating on the proposal aren’t quick, but it’s insane to me that Tempe may end up taking a year and a half to decide what they want to do with now kicking it to the voters especially considering it was the only proposal submitted. It’s just pushing back starting construction at this point and it’s incredibly frustrating. I just want to finally not have arena drama anymore.

Yes, I am told that they can.

Was this anticipated at all Craig? Somewhat spineless of council, but still an improvement on Glendale’s I suppose…

I was under the impression that Tempe really wanted a pro team back in town — so much that the city was the one pushing the arena and entertainment district to the Coyotes?

Does this mean the Tempe politicians have been turned by the baseless Phoenix and Sky Harbor threats? I say move on to Plan B and work out a deal with the Salt River Maricopa Indian Community and let Tempe pound sand!

As much as I would love it if Mereulo just pulled out entirely, you don’t become a billionaire by making rash decisions. I’m sure he’s faced worse hiccups.

Typical move by gutless politicians unwilling to make difficult decisions. Very disappointing!!

I say the Coyotes ought to just bail on Tempe and let the Salt River Maricopa Indian community benefit financially from Tempe’s indecision.

The arena can be built where the Phoenix Rising soccer stadium was located and would probably take less than two years to build without all the red tape and environmental BS.

The reservation is, of course, sovereign land and I’m sure neither the Coyotes nor the NHL wants to unnecessarily complicate matters at this juncture. There are issues of taxation, betting, land lease and revenue sharing at hand, though likely Coyotes ownership has done due diligence on all.
I thought that Mesa was rumored to be plan B, any insight Craig?

There are definitely backup plans.

I hope there were no members of the council at the game tonight.
It is outrageous that in a high school size arena we can’t outnumber the opposing teams fans.
It’s not that they “ travel well”, most of them have Arizona license plates.
The fans who care, the players and the coaches should demand support or else.
I really thought that at least in a 5000 seat arena and the Lazarus article and the glowing report of season ticket sales, we would at least, at least finally enjoy the home field advantage.
I hope very much that if this team stays, along with a team that is developed, a fan base can be developed too.
One that I bought into 10 or 12 years ago and never found. One that cares, gets fired up and a little bit testy every once in awhile.
The atmosphere in that arena tonight was a disgrace.

Ugh, it’s starting to feel like Los Arcos and 2004 all over again. Only a matter of time before Mary Manross gets involved. The good news is Mr. Meruelo seems to be primarily invested in making the team (and gaming revenues) a success, and not just in building a mall like Ellman was. Here’s hoping he prevails, but Sky Harbor has already shown that are going to play dirty with misinformation to sway voters, so unfortunately, with the city council punting their responsibility back to the voters, we’re in for a bumpy ride Yotes’ fans.
