Armstrong is smart enough to know not to abandon the plan based on small sample sizes. Team progression isn’t always linear (look at CBJ, SJ, and ANA last year to this year). It’s entirely possible this team falls back to bottom 3 next year and Mullet magic is gone. Cooley looks incredible and is very highly regarded by draft/prospect experts, but he’s 18 and hasn’t even played an NHL game yet. The Coyotes can’t put all their hopes in just him to win a Cup. I’m just hoping at this point that the hockey gods unexplainable love for the Coyotes this season that makes them unbeatable regardless of who is playing for them goes into the draft lottery, maybe get Bedard AND Michkov. By the way Craig, you linking to an Athletic Chychrun trade grade article as an example of bad journalism was a good laugh. All trade grade articles are stupid and over 90% of people that write them don’t even listen to the GM’s on their reasoning or consider additional information that contextualize the trade before “grading”.

This is a good take all around.

I’m glad the Coyotes haven’t intentionally tanked.
I would rather see them relocate than tank if I’m spending my good money to watch them.
In the military the most important thing an officer is graded on is the column “ Adapts to changes” it’s a 1-5 scoring system and anything less than 5 is career ending.
GMBA is a leader. As such, he may have to “ adapt to changes” to approach this rebuild.
If his scouts can’t find what nearly every other team has found in terms of young impact players farther down selection list, the Zegras, Suzuki, Petterson, Lafraniere, then his ability to adapt to change should be brought into question.
I think GMBA is GREAT, but anything less than 5 on his “ Officer Efficiency Report ( OER) for adapting to change should be a job ender.
I’m confident he is on top of all this.
Great article.

Two more years of strong drafts should set them up nicely, but they need difference makers.

Great analysis as usual. I laughed hard at the Lake Louise line – so, so true.

Ha! It’s not like they don’t have cool sites to shoot in town. Camelback, the Superstitions, Papago, etc.

Great article as always. Army needs to stay the course and do the job he’s paid for because of his expertise. Everyone else is entitled to their opinion but we need to consider the source before accepting it as a fact. I trust your retiring and the words spoken by those paid to do the job within the Coyotes organization. Everything else is merely interesting.
IMO, you don’t need a #1 pick to win the cup since McDavid and Matthew’s haven’t been able to do it alone. Even Ovi took me than a decade to win the cup. Vegas win the cup in the first year with “misfits” because the players played for each other, with heart, to the best of their abilities and sometimes beyond. Neither Ovi nor Vegas have repeated because they didn’t have enough depth. With patience, the Coyotes will.
Imo I believe that when players like Josh Doan, Cooley, Guenther and others are fully developed at their own rate and not rushed well have a contending team with this and future prospects to keep the pipeline competitive for years to come…. we just need that arena.

Vegas didn’t win the Cup.
The only team that has won without a No. 1 or No. 2 pick in the past 15 years is St. Louis (once). That’s generally where you find the generational talent.

We trade Chychrun, Bjugstad, Ghost and Ritchie, we gobble up points. Schmaltz is out of the lineup? Winners. Put Prosvetov in … still winning. I even saw a 4th line of Kassian, Imama, and Dauphin out there and they looked good. All the winning is fun, but I agree that the most important wins we still need this year are the Tempe vote and the draft lottery.

“This is the way.”

Honestly I am more afraid of players losing interest and leaving forever mediocre team vs rebuilding too early forever mediocre team. But I get it. It’s the plan. Honestly one thing you didn’t mention is ownerships resources to build a winning team before the new arena. I think that will trump all. Guess I’m a pessimist, but I just can’t see a path to our teams relevance right now. I must be a Coyote fan. Oh, and the Kane conspiracy, isn’t a conspiracy. Chicago will get Beddard. Weather by shenanigans or just the stupid luck that team always has.

I agree with this. I’m concerned that “ Sahara Bets” has only 313 followers.
What plans are there for this whole TED to be successful business wise?
