Koa Peat is officially a Wildcat. The highly touted prospect went viral this morning for his appearance on ESPN where he announced his official decision.
The Arizona native and 5-star McDonald’s All-American joined The Pat Mcafee Show on Thursday morning to announce his commitment. Arizona fans everywhere tuned in with anticipation, and so did the fans of Peat’s other top schools entering his decision: Arizona State, Baylor, Houston and Texas.
For a long time, it was assumed that this commitment was inevitable as Peat was being heavily predicted to commit to Arizona, but rumors began to circulate on social media that he may just commit to Arizona State over Arizona.
In the end, Peat will remain in state, but down the I-10 in Tucson.
Re-peat-ing History
According to 247Sports composite rating, Peat is the fifth-highest recruit in Arizona program history alongside names like Deandre Ayton, Stanley Johnson, Aaron Gordon, and Ndudi Ebi (Ebi never played for Arizona) respectively. The 6-foot-8 Peat is the latest in the long line of top-end talent from Arizona that chose the Cats over the Sun Devils. Richard Jefferson, Channing Frye, Nico Mannion, Mike Bibby, Dalen Terry, Jerryd Bayless are just some of the names on that list.
If Peat had chosen to stay in state but chose Arizona State, it would have been a truly shocking decision considering not only the current state of the ASU program but also the history of elite recruits from Arizona choosing the U of A.
Peat also becomes the 31st player selected to a McDonald’s All-American team to play at the University of Arizona. The Wildcats currently have three on the roster: Carter Bryant, Jaden Bradley and Caleb Love. Arizona could potentially have four McDonald’s All-Americans on next season’s roster with the possible addition of 5-star Brayden Burries.
Committing to excellence
Koa Peat is set to join Dwayne Aristode and Bryce James in the 2025 recruiting class that Tommy Lloyd, Jack Murphy and T.J. Benson have put together. Arizona’s roster next year is on the precipice of being pre-season top-3. On paper, returning for Arizona will be Jaden Bradley, K.J. Lewis, Tobe Awaka, Henri Veesaar, Carter Bryant, Anthony Dell’ Orso, Motiejus Krivas, and Emmanuel Stephen.
With Peat filling the spot Trey Townsend is leaving this off-season and Brayden Burries potentially filling the hole Caleb Love will leave behind, Arizona could be set up to not only just contend in the Big-12, but possibly for a national championship.
The current Arizona roster is already seeking national relevance as they compete against Cooper Flagg and the Duke Blue Devils in the Sweet 16 with a shot at the Elite 8 on the line.

What If?
What if Arizona does not land Brayden Burries and he instead commits to a school like Tennessee or Oregon? Arizona is returning and bringing in enough talent that Lloyd should have no problem locating an additional guard in the transfer portal. The two premier names in the portal right now are Drake’s Bennett Stirtz and New Mexico’s Donovan Dent. Both are likely to follow their coaches to their new programs, but the point here is that Arizona should have the tools at their disposal to construct a roster to contend for a national title next season and the seasons going forward.
