ASU junior quarterback Jayden Daniels is expected to enter the transfer portal by the end of the day Thursday, according to multiple outlets. The Sun Devils’ starting quarterback for the last three seasons intends to explore his options outside of Tempe.
One source told PHNX he was surprised that Daniels was going to make the move.
“Totally didn’t expect it, considering his relationship with Herm,” one former player said.
In Daniels’ three seasons as the Sun Devils’ quarterback he threw for 6,024 yards, 32 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
The expected transfer comes just months after Daniels announced in a video on social media that he’d be returning to ASU. However, since that Dec. 2 post, several coordinators have either been fired or opted to leave the program.
Daniels’ December announcement to return to ASU likely led to the school not pursuing Oklahoma quarterback transfer Spencer Rattler.
While the move isn’t official as of Thursday afternoon, the school is already processing Daniels’ request, according to Sun Devil Source.
Daniels will now join the list of players and coaches to leave the football program in some capacity. While the circumstances differ for Daniels, his anticipated departure is just the latest blow to an already defeated program.
