Love this article. There’s some cold logic in the form of a decision tree, though. Path (A): There is no new arena, team is forced to relocate. In this case Meruelo doesn’t care what we think and may not even own the team any more. Path (B): New arena is built in a desirable Valley location. In this case Meruelo also doesn’t care what we think because the excitement and relief of the fan base will overwhelm any past sins of commission or omission. Winning solves every problem. There is a potential Path (C), but I don’t know how likely it is: Meruelo intends to have additional business dealings in the Phoenix area and would benefit from a favorable public image. This was Jerry Colangelo, who became a major, if not always visible, force in Arizona business and politics. Of course, he started as GM and occasional coach of the Suns, so he had the advantage of being sort of home grown, even though he was a Chicago transplant. He suffered with us in the trenches before becoming a big shot. Meruelo doesn’t have that local pedigree and will have to work to establish it if he intends to be here long term. Coming out from behind the curtain to answer live questions from the press would be a good start.

Well said! The silence has been odd, even adding to the negativity by virtue of being silent. I would love to see a public statement or press conference, but somehow I doubt it Don’t live in Phoenix anymore, so don’t have the local pulse but still watching from several states sway.

I was like holy shxt, when Bruce Cassidy tossed out the Coyotes name. What in the world was he thinking after the Knight laid an egg the other night?

Great article. Thanks for writing that. Although I have already blocked the fashion line out of my mind. Really didn’t need to think about that again. ‍♂️. Imagine if that money alone was put into the campaign….

I agree with the sentiment. However I have 2 primary thoughts here.

1) can we stop pointing to the fashion line as a misstep. Businesses can and often do focus on multiple projects at the same time. The fashion line served a means to get high dollar spenders to spend money towards the franchise. This wasn’t meant to mobilize the every day fan. This wasn’t a distraction, this wasn’t the reason the vote failed. The vote failed because they had bad information, got bad advice and because of that they failed to react to the losing battle. You can see this in the the sheer shock they all felt when the vote failed. Not releasing the clothing line doesn’t change that.

2) we aren’t going to get public Meruelo, and to be honest, I’m not sure it’d be good for us if we did. Anytime he’s spoken, it’s been raw emotion, and reactionary…thats not the leadership we need publicly. We need a “we have a plan. I’m in talks with these people. We will have a plan ready to announce by season start, and will likely have more concrete details by free agency start. I will also be hiring *insert persons name* as hockey ops president” type leader. Based off what I’ve seen from him, if he got up and spoke freely, he’d get 1 hard question, and you’d see the emotion start to rise and then media would just press hard…until he boils over, says something horribly wrong and then we as fans are forced to defend ourselves somehow.

I do agree we need the owner to show up, we need the owner to lead…we need the owner to care.

Ill leave this with I a line that I’m not sure where I got it from: “words ain’t actions”

Great article. Although, I’m afraid his silence may be by design. If he is realizing that he has run out of options that are realistic, meet his timeline, and are thus viable, he can’t come out and admit that he has no choice but to move the team. Why not? Because a lot of fans were just further alienated from our team and he still needs to fill seats and sell merchandise to pay his players and staff for another season at Mullett. How many fans are going to spend $250 on a jersey for a team that they know is moving next season? Or spend even more than that to go to a Monday night game in November? Admitting now that he’s moving them would be financial suicide. Yes, we need words, but as others have said, we really need actions.

I figured as much.
I’m thinking they won’t tell us season ticket holders a thing.
I think the major aim may be to not have to reimburse STH’s with the money they’ve already paid.
Then during the season sometime announce that they’ve sold the team.
I’m not going to a game unless I hear they are going to stay.
It’ll just be written off cost.
The investment in the Coyotes for me was as much emotional than monetary.
I knew what I was doing back in 2013 when I bought a season ticket.
15k last year. This years ticket 10k.
It’ll be written off if there is no announcement soon. Well before the season starts.
It’s a shame. The most exciting times that I’ve ever had as a sports spectator were at GRA.
Only went 25 times last year.
If they decide to stay, I’ll reinvest bith monetarily and emotionally but will be sadly relieved if they go.
It should have succeeded here….
