Congratulations to Connor Ingram.
I’m wondering how many athletes, particularly athletes who are obsessed with their sport suffer from a mental illness
After all, that’s what an obsession is.
I am/was obsessed with a sport ( in a participatory sense not a spectator sense) that it was to the exclusion of everything else and for a time was in counseling ( in my later years when my performance suffered with age)
I never minded talking about it because I thought it was interesting.
Day to day things were insignificant ( to this day) compared with training for my sport although I am now after 47 years and 100,000 miles+ along the way…
Things like movies, bars, stores, tools, … things not involving training….is a joke.
If it’s that way for me as an athlete, imagine how obsessive it could be for a professional!
Ingram made it. The pressure to stay on top must be tremendous!!
Every penny I ever made in my life was because of my running performance but I wasn’t under the scrutiny these professional athletes are under.
Once, I was so nervous running for my military team in front of my Division Commanding General, in the pre-dawn hours, driving to the race, I was so nervous, I had to pull off the road, driving to the race site, because my legs started nervously spasming, causing me to pump the gas pedal ha…the car jerking back and forth on the road.
I kicked ass that day and in front of the man who would keep me around for awhile and employed.
An every year thing for decades
I know where Connor Ingram is coming from.
