Given that the 2023 Diamondbacks went all the way to the World Series, it can be easy to forget that they very nearly did not make the playoffs at all.
Last year's team won 84 games, finishing just a game ahead of the Chicago Cubs for the third wild card spot in the National League. They played the Cubs seven times last September, and went 6-1 in those games. Four of those Diamondbacks wins were decided by two runs or less. Theoretically, had even one of them slipped away, the Diamondbacks would have missed the playoffs entirely.
