DALLAS — One of the most challenging tasks for an MLB front office is to evaluate its own players. Diamondbacks first baseman/outfielder Pavin Smith is one such example.
A first-round draft pick in 2017, Smith has had a good, patient approach at the plate since reaching the majors in 2020, but he has struggled to impact the baseball. From 2020-23, he slashed .240/.319/.379 with 28 homers and 41 doubles in 1,094 plate appearances. Given his limited defensive value, Smith's lack of slug made him roughly a replacement level player. The Diamondbacks have shuttled him back and forth from Triple-A Reno numerous times in recent years.
