The Phoenix Mercury couldn’t get it done on the day they honored the franchise’s all-time great, Diana Taurasi.

Mercury Fall Short as Diana Taurasi’s No. 3 gets retired

Sunday’s game served as a backdrop to Taurasi seeing her No. 3 officially raised to the rafters as she joined the franchise’s illustrious Ring of Honor.

There were legends from all corners of the sporting world in attendance, but Phoenix was on the wrong end of an 88-85 decision with the Portland Fire. The Mercury fell to 13-23, meaning they’ll have their fourth losing campaign of the last five seasons.

Phoenix was outscored 52-43 in the second half after leading by six at half. DeWanna Bonner was the high scorer on the day her former teammate was honored, but it wasn’t enough.
