PHNX Daily: Transfer Portal Activity Gaining Momentum As Teams Break Down 2025-26 Needs

The NCAA transfer portal is heating up, impacting all of the basketball programs at both Arizona State and Arizona.

👋 GOOD MORNING

Happy Tuesday and happy April Fools’ Day! I’m going to resist the urge to create a sensational story just to wrap it up with a good ‘ol, “April Fools’,” even if it’s way too easy with the transfer portal situation these days. I figure I’ll be putting my family through April Fool’s hijinks enough today, so I’ll spare you 😆

I’m a little late on the draw here, but I just wanted to give a huge congrats to Arizona Wildcats softball pitcher Devyn Netz, who pitched the 11th perfect game in program history in an 8-0 win over BYU last Thursday. It was the fourth perfect game thrown by a Wildcats pitcher since 2010, and an incredible achievement!

On to the show!

A Way-Too-Early Look at the College Basketball Transfer Portal

Transfer portal activity has already been heating up, impacting all of the basketball programs at Arizona and Arizona State.

The 2024-25 NCAA basketball season is still very much underway, but other than the eight programs still battling it out in the men’s and women’s tournaments, all eyes have started to shift to next season.

It’s never too early, is it?

Both the Arizona State and Arizona men’s and women’s teams are in very different positions heading into the official offseason, whether it’s rebuilding from the ground up, or reloading for another shot at March glory. There’s still plenty of time out there — the men’s basketball portal is open from March 24 – April 22 and the women’s portal runs from March 25 – April 23 — but even just a week in some players and teams are already making moves.

Different Portal Needs For Different Teams

The Arizona men’s basketball team is coming off a Sweet 16 appearance, while the women’s team fell in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT). Both Sun Devils teams are in more of a rebuilding mode, with the men still reeling from a disappointing 2024-25 season, while the women just brought on Molly Miller as head coach, who was one of the most coveted candidates in the NCAA. A few notes: The incoming class listings can still change, and obviously the transfer portal picture (both incoming and outgoing) could shift significantly in the coming weeks.

It is a way-too-early look, after all. Here’s how it breaks down:

Arizona Wildcats Men’s Basketball

  • Finished 24-13, eliminated in Sweet 16
  • Graduating seniors: Trey Townsend, Caleb Love, Grant Weitman, Liam Lloyd, Will Menaugh, Luke Champion
  • Current players in transfer portal: Henri Veesaar, Emmanuel Stephen, K.J. Lewis
  • Current players committed from transfer portal: None (yet)
  • Incoming 2025 class: Dwayne Aristode (5-star), Koa Peat (5-star), Bryce James (3-star)

My Take: The Wildcats have taken a hit with outgoing players, and coach Tommy Lloyd likely has some work to do in the portal despite a sparkling incoming freshman class. Tough to be upset after a Sweet 16 appearance, though – it seems Arizona doesn’t rebuild, it simply reloads.

ASU Sun Devils Men’s Basketball

  • Finished 13-20, lost in first round of College Basketball Crown (CBC)
  • Graduating seniors: Alston Mason, Adam Miller, Basheer Jihad, Connor Braun, Jordan Williams
  • Current players in transfer portal: B.J. Freeman, Brandon Gardner, Brycen Long, Joson Sanon
  • Current players committed from transfer portal: Marcus Adams (Cal State Northridge), Maurice Odom (Pepperdine)
  • Incoming 2025 class: Kash Polk (3-star), Fridrik Leo Curtis (No rank), Trevor Best (No rank)

My Take: Koa Peat’s commitment to the Wildcats was damaging, and the list of players exiting is extensive. Coach Bobby Hurley has his work cut out for him to bounce back from an ugly 2024-25 campaign, but the offseason is young.

Arizona Wildcats Women’s Basketball

  • Finished 19-14, eliminated in first round of WBIT
  • Graduating seniors: Ajae Yoakum, Isis Beh
  • Current players in transfer portal: Breya Cunningham, Skylar Jones, Katarina Knežević, Jorynn Ross, Jada Williams
  • Current players committed from transfer portal: None (yet)
  • Incoming 2025 class: Jasmine Gipson (4-star), Roxy White (No rank)

My Take: This has been a brutal first week of transfer portal activity for coach Adia Barnes, as the team’s three leading scorers from this past season are on the outs. Incoming freshman Jasmine Gipson may be set to have an immediate impact next season.

ASU Sun Devils Women’s Basketball

  • Finished 10-22, no postseason appearance
  • Graduating seniors: Jazion Jackson, Hanna Miller, Adison Novosel, Nevaeh Parkinson
  • Current players in transfer portal: Mallory Miller, Kennedy Basham, Kadidia Toure, Morasha Wiggins, Kennedy Fauntleroy, Tyi Skinner, Jalyn Brown
  • Current players committed from transfer portal: None (yet)
  • Incoming 2025 class: No commits

My Take: It may look bad, but there are no surprises here. Newly named head coach Molly Miller is going to have to rebuild on the fly, in what could be a challenging first season at the helm. If Miller’s track record is any indication, though, things could get turned around awfully quick.

Musings From Around (and Sometimes Beyond) The Valley

Par for the Course: The ASU women’s golf team won the 2025 PING/ASU Invitational, finishing with a 13-stroke win over two-time, defending champion, No. 12 Northwestern. The -36/828 posted by the Sun Devils over three rounds was the second-lowest 54-hole score vs. par in program history.

Weaker this Week: The Suns will be without star Kevin Durant for at least a week after he left Sunday’s loss against Houston with what turned out to be a left ankle sprain. The play-in seems less and less likely with each passing day. Sigh.

It’s Finally (Officially) Over: The Sun Devil men’s basketball team fell 86-78 in its College Basketball Crown matchup against basketball powerhouse Nebraska yesterday, bringing the season to an official close. It’s been a tough season for Bobby Hurley and Co, and for thoughts about the offseason, well, see above.

🧢 Tip of the Hat

Gerald with an incredibly refreshing take on a Suns season that has been a wild ride, to say the least.
